Sheep

Our farm specializes in breeding high-performance sheep that are specifically suited to different types of land. On the hills, we have Perendale-based breeding ewes that are carefully selected for their superior genetics and ability to thrive in this terrain. These ewes play a crucial role in maintaining the health and productivity of our flock. On the flats, our focus is on maximizing the quality and quantity of lambs produced. We have dedicated areas where we concentrate on finishing the lambs, ensuring they reach their full potential in terms of meat quality and growth. By strategically managing our different land types and breeding programs, we aim to achieve the best possible outcomes in terms of both the performance of our sheep and the quality of the lambs they produce.

Perendale sheep have been grazing the tussock hills of Pyramid since Clarence Gardyne became the owner in 1970. Over the years, top genetics have been introduced to strengthen the breed's resilience in this challenging environment, and culling has been carried out based on their ability to survive and perform. These hardy sheep are known for their adaptability and ability to bounce back from any obstacles they encounter. Moreover, they consistently produce good lambs that are suitable for taking home and finishing.

Breeding Ewes

We aim to optimize the utilization of feed on the flat land for the purpose of successfully finishing lambs and cattle. Therefore, we are looking for a ewe that can produce high-quality lambs without requiring excessive care. Our flock, which is situated on flat and rolling terrain, consists of a combination of Cooptex, Romney and Poll Dorset genetics. To ensure the preservation of hybrid vigor, we employ crossbreeding techniques. Our main goal is to maximize productivity by selecting ewes that are resilient and efficient in converting feed into valuable meat.

Ohio Poll Dorset rams are used over all our ewes with texel in them and Poll Dorset Texel rams are used over the ewes with no texel in them to maximize meat yield and hybrid vigor. This has given us the best growth rates to kill a heavy lamb as soon as possible for 3 generations of Gardyne's.

Poll Dorset rams have superior growth rates and give us the option to kill earlier and/or heavier than other breeds.

Terminal Sire

With our own lambs finishing early at weights over 20kgCW, we then bring in store lambs from Pyramid and buy in from other properties that aren't as suited to finishing.

Cattle

Our cattle are our flexible class of stock. We buy in cattle to finish and also winter some dairy cows. The cattle grazing patterns complement the sheep, and we enjoy finishing them to their potential.
